Fire Risk Assessment Checklist (UK)

A fire risk assessment checklist gives you a practical list to work through so nothing important is missed. It does not replace the five step method, it supports it. Here is a plain checklist for a typical workplace or premises.

Ignition, fuel and oxygen

Fire needs all three. Check sources of ignition such as heaters, electrics, hot work and smoking areas; sources of fuel such as paper, packaging, waste and flammable liquids; and anything that adds oxygen such as oxygen cylinders. Keep ignition and fuel apart.

People at risk

Identify everyone who could be affected, including staff, visitors, contractors, anyone working alone or in isolated areas, and anyone who may need help to escape.

Escape and detection

1. Escape routes are clear, unobstructed and wide enough.
2. Fire exits open easily and are not locked shut during occupation.
3. Signage and emergency lighting are in place and working.
4. Fire alarm and detection is suitable, tested and audible throughout.
5. Fire extinguishers are the right type, in date and accessible.

Management and records

Check that staff know what to do, that there is an evacuation plan and assembly point, that drills are held, and that tests and maintenance are recorded. Keep the written assessment and review it regularly.
